For the 2020-2021 academic year beginning in July 2020, the Board of KEY International agreed to increase the number of new scholarships for 150 low-income girls for the three schools that have been funded in the previous years (50 girls in the Sarada Vidyalya School, 50 girls in the Lady Sivasami School, 50 girls in Rani Meyammai, all the schools located in Chennai, India). Seventy-five low-income children (25 children from each of the 3 schools) starting their 6th grade will get support for a period of 7 years for each student, as long as they have satisfactory academic performance. The remaining 75 students (25 children from each of the 3 schools) are starting their 7th grade and each student will be supported for a period of 6 years. All these children will receive a scholarship of about $40 per year, which will cover a substantial portion of their annual tuition fees. The total funding from KEY International this year for all these children will be $39,000.
I also spent about 4 months in India from October 2019 to March 2020, and explored schools in several cities that Key International could possibly expand support for low income children. After considerable research, I identified five new schools in the city of Chennai that Key International will be supporting for the academic year 2020-2021. The schools are Sarada Vidyalaya Girls’ School (a second one for Girls), The Children’s Garden School (for Girls), Avvai Illam TVR Girls School (for Girls), Savitri Ammal School, (Coed, mostly boys), and Ahobila Math Oriental School (Coed).
The Principal and teachers of each school with my approval will select twenty-five children currently in the 6th grade based on their academic performance and their low-income status.
All these children received a scholarship of about $40 per year for seven years, which covers a substantial portion of their annual tuition fees. The students have to maintain a minimum level of academic performance (equivalent to maintaining an average of 'B' in the US) to continue receiving the scholarship till they finish their high school. Thus, 125 students will be selected from the five new additional schools this academic year for overall support of 875 ‘scholarship years’ to be added this year (for a total amount of $35,000 for these five schools). This support was provided by Key International and facilitated through Dr. Koen van Rompay and the Sahaya International, Davis California. KEY International acknowledges with gratitude the help of Dr. Koen van Romay, (the founder of Sahaya Internationa www.sayaha.org). These scholarships will help them complete their high school enabling them to lead more fulfilling and productive lives. All these children receiving scholarships come from families whose average family monthly income is about $120.
Photographs of many of these scholarship recipients are posted on the revised and updated web page, www.keyinternational.org, under the section on projects. The web page has details of the projects for the previous years. As in the past, the CPR Foundation under the leadership of Dr. Nanditha Krishna (cprfoundation.org) will continue to monitor the progress of the children from these eight schools.
Unfortunately, because of the pandemic situation in Chennai, India no in class sessions have been conducted at the schools. Also, since most of these children have little or no access to computers they also had no opportunity for online learning. The Chennai government organized a public educational TV station that provided instruction to these children. Hopefully, there will be in class sessions for the academic year starting July 2021-2022. Also, because of the pandemic situation I was unable to travel to India and Africa in late 2020/early 2021. Thus for the 201-2022 academic year the eight schools already being supported this year will continue to receive scholarship funds for another 200 new children starting in sixth grade in these schools. Hopefully, if the pandemic situation improves in these countries, I may be able to visit these countries in late 2021 or early 2022 and possibly add new schools.
Key International has also supported through the Amani Empowerment Foundation a sum of $1,000 to fund the education of 10 poor children (all girls) for a year in Nyeri, Kenya (https://www.facebook.com/Amani-Empowerment-Foundation-958824867518832/?ref=page_internal).
KEY International Foundation would appreciate any help from you to support and expand our projects to help educate the poor children. You can donate by sending a check, by using your credit card or with Pay Pal. Please visit the webpage www.keyinternational.org and click on the donate tab for more information. Please note that 100 percent of your donation will go towards helping these low-income children (the Board of Directors of KEY International covers the very low administrative costs of the organization). KEY International Foundation is classified as a Public Charity under Section 501(3) (c) of the IRS code. All donations to KEY International continue to be tax deductible as per IRS rules.
Thanks to your generosity during the last 18 years in improving the lives of these children, KEY International has been able to provide scholarship support for at least 1,142 children for secondary education. Since most of these students receive the scholarship for a minimum of 6 years, this translates to at least 6,430 ‘scholarship years’ (about 85% of the support has been for girls and about 15% of the support for boys).
If you wish to have further information on these projects, please feel free to contact me or any member of the Board.
