Projects for the Year 2017
For the 2017 academic year beginning in July, the Board of KEY International approved establishing new scholarships for 60 low income girls (20 girls in the Sarada Vidyalya School, 20 girls in the Lady Sivasami School, 20 girls in Rani Meyammai, all the schools located in Chennai, India) each for a period of 6 years. All these children will receive a scholarship of about $30 per year, which will cover a major portion of their annual tuition fees, books and uniforms. For details on the projects in the previous years, please visit the updated web site www.keyinternational.org.
The support for these children will start in their 7th grade, and the funding from KEY International will help most of them complete their high school, thus enabling them to lead more fulfilling and productive lives. The children come from a family whose average family monthly income is about $70 to $100, and must maintain an equivalent of a ‘B’ average to receive this scholarship.
There are several advantages to supporting these children. The poor families have shown a strong interest and initiative in sending their children to these schools at a considerable financial burden to themselves. The KEY scholarships cover a portion of the costs and the parents cover the remaining cost of their children's education. Thus, the chance of success for these children is much higher. The schools have a mix of students, with a large proportion from primarily the lower middle-income families (family incomes of about $150-250 per month). Thus the poor children have an opportunity to mix and compete with these middle-income children and thereby have access to good quality education. Photographs of many of these children and the schools are posted on the revised and updated web page, www.keyintenational.org, under the section on projects.
In addition, KEY International has also approved funding for 200 children in the Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. Kumbakonam is a small town about 175 miles south of Chennai in India. The children in this primary school study from Grade 1 till Grade 5, and come from the poorest classes of society. The school has small classes of about 28 to 30 children making a total of 200 children in the school. These children will also receive a scholarship of about $15 per year per student, which will cover a major portion of their annual costs of education.
As in the past, the CPR Foundation will continue to monitor the progress of the children from the 3 girls’ schools (Sarada Vidyalaya, Lady Sivaswami High School and Rani Meyammai School), and also the new school added this year in Kumbakonam.
The KEY Board has also approved $2,000 for another project which would fund the provision of primary medical care and of vitamins to about 200 poor children located in the village of Alamadhi, about 25 miles north of the city of Chennai, India. This project will continue to be administered by Mr. S. Suresh (Director of the DMS Trust, www.seva-dms.com). The Trust runs a small health clinic in the village and has already been successful in improving the health of hundreds of malnourished children at a low cost.

Thanks to your generosity during the last 15 years in improving the lives of these children, KEY International has been able to provide scholarship support for a total of 672 children so far. Since most of these students receive the scholarship for 6 years, this translates to a grand total of 3,960 ‘scholarship’ years (about 90% of the support for girls and about 10% of the support for boys)! We do hope that we will continue to merit your support of our worthwhile and cost effective projects of helping the poor children. In addition to this, KEY has added a new Primary School (described above) with a funding of additional 200 children for a year.
