For the 2018 academic year beginning in July, the Board of KEY International approved establishing new scholarships for 60 low income girls (20 girls in the Sarada Vidyalya School, 20 girls in the Lady Sivasami School, 20 girls in Rani Meyammai, all the schools located in Chennai, India) for a period of 6 years for each student, as long as they have satisfactory academic performance. All these children will receive a scholarship of about $30 per year, which will cover a substantial portion of their annual tuition fees.
The support for these children will start in their 7th grade, and the funding from KEY International will help most of them complete their high school, thus enabling them to lead more fulfilling and productive lives. These children come from families whose average family monthly income is about $80 to $100.
There are several advantages to supporting these children. The poor families have shown a strong interest and initiative in sending their children to these schools at a considerable financial burden to themselves. The KEY scholarships cover a major portion of the costs and the parents cover the remaining cost of their children's education. Thus, the chance of success for these children is much higher. The schools have a mix of students, with a large proportion from the lower middle-income families (family incomes of about $150-300 per month). Thus the poor children have an opportunity to mix and compete with these middle-income children and thereby have access to good quality education. Photographs of many of these scholarship recepients are posted on the revised and updated web page, www.keyinternational.org, under the section on projects.
In addition to these scholarships, KEY International has approved funding of $2,000 for 2018-19 for 200 children in the Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. Kumbakonam is a small town about 175 miles south of Chennai in India. The children in this primary school study from Grade 1 until Grade 5, and come from the poorest classes of society. The school has small classes of about 28 to 30 children making a total of 200 children in the school. These children will receive a scholarship of about $15 per year per student, which will cover a substantial portion of their annual costs of education.
As in the past, the CPR Foundation under the leadership of Dr. Nanditha Krishna (cprfoundation.org) will continue to monitor the progress of the children from the 3 girls’ schools (Sarada Vidyalaya, Lady Sivaswami High School and Rani Meyammai School), and also the school in Kumbakonam.

The KEY Board has also approved $4,000 this year for another project which would fund the provision of primary medical care and of vitamins to about 200 poor children located in the village of Alamadhi, about 25 miles north of the city of Chennai, India. Ms. N. Rajeshwari (DMS Trust, www.seva-dms.com) will administer this project. The DMS Trust runs a small health clinic in the village and has already been successful in improving the health of hundreds of malnourished children at a low cost.

Thanks to your generosity during the last 15 years in improving the lives of these children, KEY International has been able to provide scholarship support for a total of 732 children for secondary education so far. Since most of these students receive the scholarship for 6 years, this translates to a grand total of 4,320 ‘scholarship’ years (about 90% of the support for girls and about 10% of the support for boys)!
